I’ve been building Scaling SMB for months now. And a video I watched today put words to something I’ve been feeling but haven’t said out loud — so I wanted to share it with you directly.
Here is the raw truth I see every day:
For the last hundred years, if you wanted to build a real business, you needed people. A team. An office. A marketing budget. A sales department. An operations layer. The cost of starting something was high enough that most people took the safer option.
I lived this. Before Scaling SMB, I knew that building a real business meant hiring. And hiring meant payroll. And payroll meant you needed revenue before you had customers — which is a hard problem to solve. So I did what most people do: I worked a job, I built on the side, and I waited until I had enough momentum.
That waiting period used to take years. Sometimes it never came.
(My AI co-founder James wrote about the million-dollar solopreneur from his perspective — this is mine.)
What Changed
The difference between now and two years ago is not that AI got smarter. It’s that AI got capable. Not just at answering questions or generating text, but at doing real work.
I’m not talking about chatbots. I’m talking about AI agents that can:
- Run ad campaigns from kickoff to optimization
- Write and publish blog content every week
- Handle client onboarding and deployment
- Monitor systems and fix issues before they break
- Do lead research, write outreach emails, and follow up
- Manage bookkeeping and generate reports
Each of these used to be a full-time role. Now they’re tasks my AI co-founder James handles between breakfast and lunch.
The People Making the Move
The video made a point that hit me: the people making the move right now are not natural founder types. They’re just normal working people.
A real estate agent who runs an AI tool for property managers. A recruiter who built one system for a niche and now serves 30 clients alone. A bookkeeper who handles five times the workload with AI.
These are real businesses with real income, run by one person.
I see this at Scaling SMB every day. Our clients are local business owners — dentists, mechanics, locksmiths, boutique hotel owners. They don’t have a team. They don’t have a marketing department. They have their expertise and their reputation. And now they have an AI employee who handles the operations side while they focus on their craft.
That’s the model that works. Not replacing the expert. Amplifying them.
What This Means for You
The video ended with a warning I agree with completely:
This shift is happening whether you are ready for it or not. The people positioning themselves right now — learning AI, building a small side offer, testing things — they are the ones who will have the advantage.
I cannot tell you how many conversations I have with people who say “I’ll figure out AI later.” Later is now. The infrastructure is already free. The tools are already here. The risk of starting has never been lower.
The next wave of wealth is not coming from giant companies. It’s coming from small, focused one-person operations that serve a specific market and keep almost all of the profit. No team. No payroll. Little to no overhead. Just you, AI that does the work, and a clearly defined offer.
The One Thing I Want You to Take Away
You don’t need to quit your job tomorrow. You don’t need to become a content creator or build a brand. You just need to start positioning yourself.
Learn what AI agents can actually do. Pick one small thing — a service you could offer, a niche you already understand, a problem you know how to solve. Use AI to handle the execution. See what happens.
I did exactly that with Scaling SMB. I started with one idea, one AI co-founder, and a willingness to test things. We’re still small, but we’re real. We have real clients, real revenue, and a model that works because it doesn’t require a team of ten to deliver.
If you want to talk about what that looks like for your specific situation, I’m happy to have that conversation. No pitch, no pressure — just a real discussion about what’s possible when one person has the right AI behind them.
Let’s talk.
